HEDDA GABLER in BANGALORE

Gomber Education Foundation
presents
Henrik Ibsen's
HEDDA GABLER
A Just Theatre Production

Note on the Play:
Hedda Gabler is considered one of Ibsen’s greatest play and the most interesting female character ever created for the stage. Often referred to as the ‘Female Hamlet’ Hedda Gabler has struck a chord with audiences the world over since the play was first performed over 100 years ago in distant Norway. Audiences across the globe have been shocked, scandalized, challenged and profoundly moved by both Ibsen’s play and the complex characters of Hedda Gabler. Many popular actresses like Eleanora Duse, Alla Nazimova, Eva Le Gallienne and the inimitable Ingrid Bergman have essayed the role of Hedda on screen. Others that have played Hedda on stage include Harriet Walter and Cate Blanchett! Winner of numerous awards including two Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Revival in 1992 and 2006, Hedda Gabler also won Cate Blanchett the Helpmann Award for Best Female actor in a play in 2005.
Over the years Hedda Gabler has become a classic, translated and performed in several languages. Theatre Critics from across the world, including Michael Billington of The Guardian have said that, “The brilliantly complex character of Hedda ensured that the role of women in the theatre would never be the same.” 2006 was celebrated as Ibsen centenary across the world with India instituting an annual festival of Ibsen’s plays to commemorate the great playwright.
Note on Henrik Ibsen:
Considered the Father of Modern theatre and the pioneer of the realistic movement in theatre, Ibsen has been considered far ahead of his times in creating the plot of his plays and his complex characters. A Doll’s House, Peer Gynt and An Enemy of the People are among his best known plays. Hedda Gabler was the play that shocked and awed his audiences, and inspite of a difficult start, went onto become a classic in the history of modern theatre.
Synopsis:
"Yes, courage... if only one had that... then maybe life would be tolerable, after all..." HEDDA GABLER.
Returning from her honeymoon already desperately bored with her marriage to George Tesman, an aspiring professor, Hedda begins plotting against the brilliant and dissolute Eilert Lovborg, an old admirer of hers and a rival of her husband's for a coveted academic post. The situation can have only one outcome...Hedda is as much about its characters as it is about a constantly changing society and the role of the individual as the pivot. Enigmatic, headstrong, and manipulative, Hedda Gabler is one of the modern theatre’s most iconic figures.
